Brief History on Zumba® Fitness:

Zumba® Fitness is a dance fitness program created by Colombian dancer and choreographer Alberto “Beto” Perez during the 1990s. As the story goes, Beto Perez forgot his tape of aerobics music for a class he was teaching that day, so he went to his car, listened to music – consisting of non-traditional salsa and merengue music – and improvised a class using this non-traditional aerobics music. After finding initial success in Colombia, he moved to the United States in 2001 and well, … the rest is history.

What is Zumba® Fitness?

Zumba® Fitness involves dance and aerobic elements. The choreography incorporates Hip-Hop, Soca, Samba, Salsa, Merengue and Mambo and combines squats and lunges to create a fun and upbeat workout routine. At Just Dance On, Zumba® Fitness classes are typically about an hour long and are taught by Zumba® Fitness and Professional Ballroom and Latin Dance instructor Melinda Mielock, who has been licensed by Zumba® Fitness, LLC. The exercises include music, which comes from the following dance styles: Cumbia, Salsa, Merengue, Mambo, Flamenco, Cha Cha Cha, Reggaeton, Soca, Samba, Hip-Hop, Axé, and Tango with both fast and slow rhythms. Routines can by easily modified to include Toning, Strength, and Resistance training.

So, what does Zumba® mean?

Well, believe it or not “Zumba” has no particular meaning at all, it was chosen arbitrarily as a brand name. (Fun Fact)
